Palin and MoveOn cut from same cloth
I write a crappy little blog for my friends and family to read, if others read it…well, that’s nice, but I’m not writing for the masses or any constituency. The amazing thing about living in this age is the incredible amount of information at our disposal. Equally amazing is how frequently those who do represent large constituencies fail, either purposely, accidentally or coincidentally, to analyze their own message for consistency.
Seriously, how hard is it to Google yourself?
Sarah Palin and Freedom of Speech
It’s easy to find examples of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin contradicting herself, but you know it’s egregious when Foxy News calls her on it.
“Just as we’d be appalled if any public figure of Rahm’s stature ever used the “N-word” or other such inappropriate language, Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities – and the people who love them – is unacceptable, and it’s heartbreaking.”
Fair enough, I can see how people would feel that way. Emanuel apologized for the remarks and the controversy went away. But casting aspersions on others is a tricky business, especially when you show yourself to be cast from the same mold.
Life was moving along just fine for Palin until something truly ‘unpatriotic’ happened on the Dr. Laura radio show. Shockingly, people were surprised to learn Dr. Laura, whose considers herself superior to those ‘deviant sub-human gays’, is also a racist.
Really??? We’re shocked that someone who looks down on one minority would harbor similar feeling towards another minority? I was shocked that Dr. Laura actually had black listeners.
OK, so now I’m sure Palin will remember she blasted Emanuel for a similar transgression five months ago and call for Dr. Laura to resign, right?
Hells no, Palin’s tweet for Dr. Laura:
Dr.Laura:don’t retreat…reload! (Steps aside bc her 1st Amend.rights ceased 2exist thx 2activists trying 2silence”isn’t American,not fair”)
Breathtakingly hypocritical of herself, and proof positive Palin doesn’t write or proofread her Facebook posts.
Maybe it’s because Palin’s mentally challenged son is one of those “real” Americans — Palin’s not so subtle code for white Americans — and the caller on Dr. Laura’s show was not.
Note: I understand what Dr. Laura was trying to say, and she may have a valid point. It’s the way Dr. Laura flaunted her use of the N-bomb that was disturbing.
MoveOn’s Money
MoveOn.org released what appears to be a third-grader’s art project as a commercial this week to draw attention to Targets’ political donations to a Republican candidate with anti-gay marriage views.
Well that’s nice. What could possibly be wrong with that?
Well instead of mentioning the donation went to a candidate with an anti-gay marriage track record, MoveOn’s ad warns of evil corporations trying to influence elections with large sums of cash.
Pot: Hello Kettle?
Kettle: Yes.
Pot: Ummm, you’re black.
Is anyone at MoveOn’s ad agency paying attention to their client’s mission? What do they do with their money? The whole purpose of MoveOn’s existence is to influence elections!!!!
So Sarah Palin extolls the virtues of the 1st Amendment when it favors her agenda, but trashes it when it applies to her opposition. And MoveOn contributes large sums of money to influence elections, but trashes others for doing the same.
The sad part is they both think we’re too stupid to notice.
The Black vs Gay Comparison
Denial of basic civil rights, whether it’s based on race or orientation, is discrimination. By its very definition, discrimination doesn’t lend itself to relative terms, something is either discriminatory in its distinction of a group or its not. However one of the comparisons I hear quite often is relating the struggle for black civil rights to the gay marriage debate.
While they may seem similar in certain aspects I believe there are some major differences between the two. My analysis is hardly breaking any ground, but ask yourself this question: If you had to be either gay or black, what would you choose?I know I would choose gay and that’s probably because I’m a gay white man. In my life I’ve seen much more overt discrimination towards blacks than I have towards my own community, and I fear that had I been at a socio-economic disadvantage, as are many young blacks, I may have not been as fortunate to have the things I have in my life.
Gay marriage is an important issue and the current course of things seems positive, but I think it’s not only a stretch to attach our fight for civil rights to the coattails of another movement, but also it muddies the water — that wasn’t a racist joke.
What would you choose?

Can South Carolina Secede Again?
Last year I read Plain Honest Men, a great book chronicling how wheels off our political system was in the days of our founding fathers. However, rarely in the history of our great country has one candidate embarrassed a state and himself as much as South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Green; his own party has asked for him to withdraw from the race.
Awkward
Alvin Green’s first major campaign speech
I understand the whole ‘let’s throw the bums out’ mentality, but don’t we need leaders who can represent the U.S. well overseas and at home. Green’s facing Republican incumbent Jim Demint, who famously, and incorrectly, predicted the defeat of health care reform would be Obama’s Waterloo.
Can South Carolina secede from the Union again?
Experiments in Suburbia: Sacrifice
Posted by omgitsrfb in Experiments in Suburbia on July 2, 2010
One week down, eight to go. Last week mom arrived for a nine-weeker; so far so good.
Working from home means we’ve spent almost every day together. To avoid the constant barrage of fear mongering blondes on Fox News I’m going to take my work up to the coffee shop for the next few days. We tried channel blocking Fox but Mom’s still got about one-third of a functioning brain; isn’t that right in Fox’s demo?
Observations from Week One
- She gets drunk a lot quicker than she used to.
- My left arm is a cane, but of course she doesn’t need one to walk.
- She’s sharp.
- At half a pack a day, she’s reached a point in her life where she doesn’t give a shit about her health anymore.
When a slightly intoxicated Eric first suggested my mom should stay with us for the summer I was reluctant. After all, we’re newlyweds, with a new house, there’s so much to do.
I’ve realized there’s never a good time for a lot of things in life and if you spend all of your life waiting for the right time it may never come.
Yes, I’m having to do some things that aren’t pleasant, and I’ve seen things that a son shouldn’t have to see on his mother, but I’m actually having fun with my mom; when she’s not outside smoking of course.
I’m cherishing this time with her not because I may never get the opportunity again or she may not be able to do this again but because I want to make this a special time for her.
Gay Men and Sacrificing
When maturing, I think a lot of gay men miss out on the benefits of sacrificing for the sake of others. While our straight friends are realizing that sacrifice comes with marriage and children, we’re left wondering whether those jeans make us look fat, if we’re tan enough or if we look cute in our car.
It’s not that we’re selfish. After all, it’s our patriarchal society that has excluded us from most of the routine responsibilities of life. You can’t tell us we can’t do certain things then blame us for not doing them. So generally speaking, gay men learn about sacrifice later in life, it’s not something we do well because we’re not practiced at it.
Learning how to sacrifice, another experiment in suburbia.
Next up: The overly-hetero 4th of July Fireworks show.
Terriers Fundraiser
I’m in the midst of a 3-week span that requires Sunday devotion to lazy man’s baseball (softball).
I love my team and I love playing softball. Sure we get on each other’s nerves and their are lots of strong personalities but at the end of the day — generic business speak left over from my days at HSBC — I find that I’m closer to this group of guys than I am to my members of my own family.
It’s not just that we compete and practice together for three to four hours per week, but we also eat (and more than likely drink) after games, have pool parties, attend birthdays, etc…
Guys come and go, but there’s a core group that play every year. This Sunday, after our games, we’re hosting our annual fundraiser. Our sponsor Taddy’s Pet Services pays for our uniforms and stuff but we have to come up with money for practice fields, tournament fees, drinking, etc…
So if you’re in DFW this Sunday come play with the Terriers.

Stick it Farmville
I’m an all-or-nothing kind of guy, meaning when I decide to do something, I’m all in.
This mostly explains why I don’t go out much anymore; cause I can’t do just a few drinks, or whatever, without staying out until 2 or 3 AM. It also explains why I’m passionate about the things that capture my attention.
There’s no middle ground with me, it’s both a blessing and a curse. The biggest question with me usually isn’t will I keep something up but rather how far will I take it.
Working out and maintaining some semblance of a healthy body, save the college decade, had always been important to me, but 12 months ago I decided the time I normally devote to working out, should be invested into developing my business. I’m sure the pending marriage and subsequent plans to move out of the gayborhood also contributed to this need to no longer feel cute.
So there was no working out, I mean none. After all when I’m out, I’m out.
The days of not working out are now over, and true to my fanatical all-or-nothing nature I’m going all in on the diet as well. After seeing some clips from the documentary film Food Inc. a few weeks ago I decided that I’m going to eat organic and grow my own herbs and shit.
After all, 40 years of putting all kinds of bad things into one’s body is enough. So we planted our own little suburban garden in a big ol’ industrial-sized planter the previous owners left in the backyard. So far we got that one tomato plant with three little ‘maters’ on it, rosemary, basil and cilantro.
We need a name for our garden:

When Eric gets back from his trip we’ll take some before P90X photos and post them here.
My new mohawk
My hair has been just a lil out of control lately and instead of getting in cut in the normal middle-aged, gay Caeser style I decided to have fun last night. No, I didn’t keep it like this, its short all the way around now.
This is probably the result of working from home too much. I really need to make a concerted effort to work at Starbucks more often cause I might be going a little stir crazy.
It’s funny how something as simple as a haircut can change your outlook though. I think I grow my hair out when I get down, so I’m glad to have this new short look.
Going to start P90X again next week so this new hairdo fits. I thought about carving some designs in my head but Eric wouldn’t let me.
Apology from O’Reilly is worthless
In the wake of pinhead Bill O’Reilly’s latest statement of ignorance, GLBT leaders such as HRC’s Michael Cole have stated “an apology is certainly warranted”….huh? An apology for equating a gay teen at McDonalds with a terrorist, and we think he should apologize?
Why do some people insist on others apologizing for their views? This is what the asshole believes, he shouldn’t apologize for it. Asking someone to apologize and show contrition for something they truly believe in is ridiculous and a waste of time.
I don’t need or want an apology from him because that’s what he believes. I say it’s best to ignore the assmunch; he only says things like this for ratings which in turn allows him to sell more coffee mugs to ‘Real Americans’.
Stop asking him to apologize, instead let’s shine the light on him by showing as many people as possible this video of him.
He’s a real culture warrior working on that Inside Edition isn’t he? What’s next Mario Lopez running as a Tea Party candidate?
Here’s the McDonalds commercial from France featuring the gay teen:
Soldier posts gay terrorist video on Facebook
Just when you think things are improving in this country we’re reminded at just how stupid and close minded some people are.
Of course the soldier, Spc. Robert A. Rodriguez, probably ‘has no problem with gay people’ and ‘has gay friends’. It’s clear this guy’s no Einstein, not only did he verbally assault two small children but he also came up with the bright idea to post it on Facebook.
